customers always are right?

Nope. Years ago, I worked as a clerk in a store. This woman bought a Christmas bulb which she gave to her bratty kid, who promptly threw it on the floor (not accidentally dropped, it, but THREW it) and the lady said “I want to return this; it’s broken”!

The saying is not meant to be literal. THE POINT is to give a high priority to customer satisfaction.
